Resident Question
Gayle sent the following question to me. I wanted to share with you a summary of my response.
How do you feel about all the new housing development going on in Newcastle? What do you suggest we do with the deer who are soon going to have nowhere to go?
Housing is a really tough topic, one I have struggled with while on the planning commission. To put it plainly, development is going to continue to happen. In fact, the city is required to accomodate a certain level of housing growth over the next 20 years. So the question is not about IF we should continue to build new houses but rather HOW those houses should be built. I would like to encourage more "Smart Growth". For example, on the Planning Commission I have supported an increase to lot sizes, changes to our clearing and grading ordinances, as well as policies that would promote denser growth in downtown to ease growth in the outlying neighborhoods.
In regard to the deer, the unfortunate reality is that we live in a growing urban environment. I believe it is our responsibility to do our best to preserve natural habitat where it makes sense. We have some great natural resources in Newcastle like May Creek Park, Lake Boren and dozens of other large greenbelts. As a city, I believe we should be committed to making sure that animals (deer in this case) have the means by which to live within these habitats safely. For example during the building of Coal Creek parkway we should invest in making areas of safe passage along May creek for wildlife to migrate between Cougar Mountain and the lowlands of Lake Washington. Incidentally, I live in a house that backs May Creek Park, and I love seeing the deer that wander through my yard from time to time. However that same deer wandering along SE 89th in the middle of the night poses a risk to itself and anyone driving along the road.

It's Official! I'm a candidate!
Today I officially filed my candidacy for Newcastle City Council Position #5. Here is a picture of me signing my candidacy form.

Surprisingly the process was fairly simple. I am surprised that more people don't take the time to "throw their hat in the ring". The folks at the King County Admin Building were especially helpful (might I even say cheerful) and not at all like the stereotype most government workers are made out to be.
Do you want to know who is running. Check the
King County Elections page for Newcastle.
The filing deadline is this friday July 29th.
